The Northern Ireland Renewables Industry Group (NIRIG) is a collaboration between the Irish Wind Energy Association and RenewableUK. NIRIG represents the views of the Renewable Energy Industry in Northern Ireland, providing a conduit for knowledge exchange, policy development support and consensus on best practice between all stakeholders in renewable energy.

The fifth annual NIRIG Policy Workshop will take place on 29th January 2015.  This event will assess the key policy developments that have facilitated the growth of the renewable electricity sector and will examine the requirements for continued growth in order to reach our 2020 targets.  2015 marks the mid-way point of the Strategic Energy Framework, which is Northern Ireland’s key energy policy, and will also see a fundamental change to our planning and local government framework.

‘Driving sustainable development’ will focus on the market and energy framework changes that are being driven in both the all-island SEM and across the UK.   Northern Ireland’s location at the nexus of two energy jurisdictions provides some unique facets for discussion.   The changing policy environment in the run-up to local government and planning reform will be assessed in ‘Planning for Sustainability’, and speakers will present views on how the planning system can ensure sustainable development.  The final session of the day will look at the opportunities and routes to a more sustainable future for Northern Ireland.
