Curtailment

Curtailment occurs when the amount of output available to be exported to the grid from a particular generator or group of generators exceeds the rated maximum capacity of the transmission line which connects it to the rest of the transmission network.

This may occur in times of very high wind energy yield. It is sometimes the case that the grid operator is unwilling to upgrade the particular transmission line in question, as they do not deem it to be cost effective to invest in significant infrastructural improvement in order cope with the infrequent occurrence of maximum or near to maximum wind output.
