IWEA Announces Winners of Global Wind Day Photo Competition
Winners Bring Fresh Perspective of Wind Energy
The Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA) has announced the winners of its Global Wind Day photo competition supported by Energia, SSE Renewables and Siemens, which aims to highlight the benefits of harnessing wind power to replace unsustainable fossil fuels. Global Wind Day takes place annually on June 15th and is being marked in Ireland through a series of events across the country including ‘Walk and Talk’ open days at numerous wind farms across Ireland. Global Wind day is supported by the UN and by the Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union.
1. First prize:
Photographer Paul Whelan highlights the need to create a sustainable future in order to protect the wellbeing of future generations. Location: Tournafulla wind farm, Co.Limerick

Photographer Keith Arkins highlights how wind turbines can become immersed in their environment and often complement their surroundings. Location: Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry.
"This image was taken as part of a photo essay on behalf of Mainstream Renewable Power to show the construction of their first wind farm based in Cahersiveen Co. Kerry. In the last hour of a two day shoot as I was standing on the edge of the hillside the clouds parted and the sun began to light certain areas of the countryside. My goal had been to create images where the wind turbines complemented their locations and felt I got it in this shot more than any other."
